Merle Hazzard

1989 Chevrolet K5 Blazer

Old-school 4×4. Modern capability.

Merle Hazzard is a purpose-built K5 Blazer designed for serious off-road use while remaining capable of long-distance travel and family camping adventures.

Built around one-ton axles, 40-inch tires, long-travel leaf springs, and extensive custom fabrication, Merle combines traditional off-road hardware with an evolving approach to drivetrain technology, performance, and capability.

Having already tackled trails such as the Rubicon, Merle continues to evolve through real-world experience, with several major upgrades currently in development.

Current Development

Modern Drivetrain Conversion

Merle's next major evolution combines a ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission, Klune-V 4:1 underdrive, and gear-driven NP205 transfer case.

The NP205 will be clocked upward to accommodate a nearly flat belly skid, improving ground clearance and protection for technical off-road use.

The conversion will also include a dedicated transmission cooler, custom drivetrain mounting, and a full aluminum center console incorporating the new transmission controls and JB Custom Fab triple-stick shifters.

Engine Development

Merle currently runs the factory 350 TBI V8. A 6.0L LS conversion is also under consideration as part of the upcoming drivetrain overhaul, with an emphasis on low-end torque, drivability, and reliability.

Future Development

Merle is an ongoing project, with additional upgrades planned as the truck continues to evolve.

Suspension: Upgraded shocks for the current leaf-spring configuration, with a long-term transition to custom link suspension and coilovers.

Steering: Double-shear high-steer configuration.

Rear Axle: Selectable locker conversion.

Continued Refinement: Additional improvements to drivetrain reliability, vehicle protection, trail capability, and overall functionality.
